A practice shaped by nunchi.
Eujee Ahn is a painter and fiber artist operating within the liminal space between being seen, felt, and perceived. As a former third-culture kid, she explores the friction generated by the interaction of cultures and the locations they inhabit.
Her practice is deeply informed by the Korean concept of Nunchi, the subtle art of understanding feelings and thoughts without words — inviting the viewer to engage with her work through intuition rather than overt explanation.
Reflecting her journey through life, Eujee applies Western media and techniques to reinterpret Korean subject matter and heritage. She is particularly inspired by traditional architecture and textiles, and wishes to honor the art of handicraft present in Korean artifacts.
Eujee's earliest memories are of her childhood bedroom walls, which were covered in murals she created by wandering around with a crayon in hand. Drawing, painting, and play-sewing were her favorite childhood activities, and she now honors these well-loved subjects through her evolving practice in textile arts and painting.
Born in Toronto, ON, Canada, she was raised in Seoul during her formative years, navigating life as both an expatriate and a native. As a direct beneficiary of South Korea's rapid socioeconomic rise in the 1990s, Eujee became fascinated by the forces that shape society — leading her to major in Political Science and International Development Studies at McGill University, and to a Master's degree from George Washington University.
To bridge her analytical background with her creative practice, she attended the California College of the Arts Extension program, and is currently pursuing a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Visual Arts at UC Berkeley.
